The award was established at the University of Georgia through an endowment from Delta Air Lines. The award cermeony is held annually and the first recipient was Jimmy Carter. Some notable winners were Mikhail Gorberchev, Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mendela. This year winner is President Martti Ahtisaari (1994-2000) of Finland for his work brokering peace negotiation at Kosovo and in Aceh (Indonesia). Our own SVP of Human Resources Beth Johnston presented the award to President Martti Ahtisarri. The event was held at UGA's Continuing Education and Conference Center.
